Bei Titanom sind wir sehr glücklich über unsere Technologiepartnerschaft, die wir 2023 mit dem Team der phase-6 GmbH gestartet haben. Gemeinsam haben wir einen innovativen Grammatiktutor entwickelt. Dieser kann Lernenden didaktisch wertvolles Feedback geben, das ihnen hilft, ihre Grammatik-kenntnisse eigenständig zu verbessern. Dieses neue Produkt ergänzt das bestehende Vokabeltrainer-Angebot von phase-6 auf wertvolle Weise.

PHASE-6 GMBH

The company phase-6 helps teachers and students to make their language lessons more effective and thus achieve their learning goals. After entering the market in 2005, phase6 has established itself as Germany’s leading vocabulary trainer and is a specialist in language learning apps based on scientific findings from didactics and learning psychology. Automatic, level-dependent repetitions ensure successful and sustainable acquisition of vocabulary and language knowledge and intuitive, motivated and fun learning. Based on their shared motivation to make language learning more effective, phase-6 GmbH and Titanom Technologies GmbH have launched a joint product development.

GRAMMATIC TUTOR

During the language learning process, many students find it difficult to use the grammar rules they have learned in theory correctly. As it is necessary to recognize which rule has to be used in which way depending on the context, it is not enough to simply learn the structure of these rules by heart. Intensive practice is necessary, which is only partially effective if you compare your incorrect solution with the model solution. Without justification, learners are often unable to understand where the underlying error in reasoning lies. The potential for an “aha” moment is not fully exploited here – and this is precisely what the grammar tutor is intended to make possible.

THIS IS THE PRODUCT

Der Grammatiktutor ist eine neuartige Web-App, die es Schülern ermöglicht, die im Unterricht gelernten Grammatikthemen zu üben. Sie bietet eine Reihe abwechslungsreicher Aufgabentypen, um die verschiedenen Inhalte zu überprüfen. If a student does not solve a task correctly, they immediately receive AI-generated feedback that picks up on their mistake and guides them to the correct solution in a pedagogically meaningful way. As ChatGPT is currently unable to generate such specific feedback, one of the main components of the grammar tutor was developed: the AI-based Feedbackengine.

This checks the student’s input, identifies previously defined error types and provides valuable didactic support for each error type. This feedback is specifically tailored to the respective task and error and is generated dynamically by a language model. The grammar tutor thus provides feedback on the students’ errors, which is at the didactic level of a teacher.

Error pattern recognition through computational linguistics: In cooperation with the phase-6 editorial team, various highly specific grammatical error types have been defined. Thanks to computational linguistics methods, these can be precisely identified in the grammar tutor.

Individualized, formative feedback: Clear templates have been defined for each error type, which describe how didactically valuable feedback should be given. Based on these templates, a language model is used to dynamically generate feedback for each input and task that responds to it in the best possible way.
