DIGITAL STORYTELLING FOR THE CLASSROOM
Since Brainix GmbH was founded, a close technology partnership has been maintained with Titanom Technologies GmbH. Together, two holistic digital textbooks for the subjects English and mathematics were developed, which are based on storytelling methods. By using macro-adaptive learning level measurements, students can track their progress and receive individually selected exercises to support them. This combination has convinced numerous schools of the innovative educational concept.

BRAINIX GMBH

With Brainix students acquire the basic skills of a school subject largely independently and self-directed. The deepening takes place using tasks in Brainix with the support of the teacher. Brainix content and assignments cover approximately 50% of the allotted class time and a similar amount of homework time. Exciting, easy-to-understand teaching of material, interactive practice and constant feedback to learners, teachers and parents ensure teaching and learning success throughout the entire school year. Driven by the shared vision of making learning in schools even more effective through digitalization, the partnership with Titanom was initiated.

SELF-REGULATED LEARNING

Students often learn because they are motivated to do so from outside. They do their homework because it is checked by parents and teachers and usually only learn content for exams. Especially in the lower grades, they find it difficult to organize the learning material independently and practice it in a targeted manner. This is exactly where the holistic digital textbook from Brainix comes into play. In contrast to a printed textbook, the digital, storytelling-based textbook takes learners on a multimodal journey through the material, on which they implicitly acquire new knowledge. Metacognitive prompts are used in various places to promote self-regulated learning. These encourage learners to set their own goals, plan their tasks and then reflect on their results. In the background, an advanced learning level measurement records your skills and competencies. This information is used to suggest individually suitable tasks that match the current learning level of the students. In this way, they learn towards their goals in a structured manner and without being overwhelmed.

THIS IS THE PRODUCT

When developing Brainix, a key challenge was to develop a learning level measurement that was able to precisely assess a student both at the level of content skills and at the level of process-oriented competencies. In close collaboration with the Brainix editorial team and the KU Eichstätt-Ingolstadt, our own model was developed, which was further refined and optimized through numerous user tests. In addition, thousands of tasks had to be precisely assigned to a learning goal taxonomy. This process was largely automated using AI-based methods and only required random checks by editors.

After development was completed, the entire system was tested in two extensive field tests. A subsequent scientific study found that learners were able to learn better in a self-regulated manner with the support of metacognitive prompts and that good students were even able to improve their school performance with the help of these prompts.

Macroadaptive learning level measurement: Based on scientific principles of didactics and learning psychology, our own learning status model was developed. Using Markov chains, this was able to approximate precise estimates of the learners’ sovereignty in procedural skills for a predefined skill.
Assignment of tasks to the learning goal taxonomy: Already in 2021, simple methods from the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP), such as keyword extraction and Word2Vec embeddings, enabled thousands of practice tasks to be precisely assigned to a learning target taxonomy. This saved hundreds of working hours for the editorial team and at the same time ensured scalability for the production process of further content.

What fascinated me most about the development of Brainix was that together we managed to put current learning psychology findings into practice.
